The huge monument that is alongside the Devil’s Bridge on the Gotthard near Andermatt, Switzerland, recalling the march of General Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov and his troops across the Swiss Alps. Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (russ. Александр Васильевич Суворов, wiss. Transliteration Aleksandr Vasil'evič Suvorov; * 24. November 1729 in Moskau; † 18. Mai 1800 in Sankt Petersburg) Suvorov remains vividly remembered in the parts of the Swiss Alps his army passed through. Even though his famished troops plundered the countryside bare and his campaign was ultimately fruitless, the general is venerated as a liberator from the occupying French.
